About Ashington Festival

The first Ashington Festival was in 1997 and has always been held on the 3rd Saturday in August. It was decided that instead of having the Fun Day and the Flower Show on two different days it would be better to have one large day. All the businesses around the village were asked if they would help by sponsoring money for the day. I remember we got nearly £3,000 in sponsorship money which was excellent at that time. The clubs and groups of the village were asked if they would have some kind of stall to raise money for themselves and the Festival.

It was a great success and as it has got so big we are running out of space on the Recreation Ground. We now have stage, arena acts, lots of craft and charity stalls, sideshows, Harris Funfair which is our own village fair and other fair rides. We have a fun Dog Show, a Classic Car Show and vintage vehicles, a Car Boot Sale, food outlets and a licenced bar. The evening entertainment consists of live bands and a fantastic Firework display.

Sadly over the years we have lost the flower show and the carnival procession.

As the Festival has got so big we have to raise at least £13,000 to pay for the day. This is achieved through sponsorship, donations and income from the day, but we need more help and support. So if anyone can help in any way, please contact me.

The Festival day over the years has also been a reunion day. People who were born in the village or used to live here, come back to meet old friends and family which gives it a real community spirit atmosphere. We have heard some very moving stories over the years where people have not seen each other in a long time. So if you were born in Ashington village or used to live in the village come to the Festival and catch up with old friends to reminisce.

If the Festival make a profit then the Festival Committee supports some village groups by making a donation, and the rest is put aside for the following years show. This way the money then stays within the village.

Come and enjoy the day!
